EXHIBITION MARKS MILESTONE IN NEWCASTLE’S HISTORY

A special exhibition has opened today, commemorating the Newcastle Earthquake, 25 years ago.

Titled ‘Then and Now’, the exhibition features 25 portraits of paramedics, doctors and business owners holding photographs taken in the aftermath of the disaster on December 28, 1989.

It even includes a portrait of Kate Wells, who gave birth to her daughter a minute before the earthquake struck.

Newcastle Museum Deputy Director, Julie Baird, says the impact of the natural disaster, which resulted in 13 lives lost and another 160 people being hospitalised, is still felt by many.

“Recording the stories of the people photographed for Earthquake Then and Now was a deeply moving experience. While every story was unique, a common theme of resilience, community and courage emerged through the shared memories,” she said.

The exhibition will run until February 28.
