10 QUESTIONS WITH JOHN HARVEY – Cessnock Mayoral Candidate

1. What led you to run for Mayor?

I have a passion to make our region one we can all be proud of. I am deeply concerned with the way our present Council has mismanaged their role as caretakers of our community. It was time to stop the rot.

2. How would you change what has been a dysfunctional council?

I believe there is no place for politics in local government. What we need is a balanced Council. Not a political balance – but one with representatives who
1) have the knowledge for the proper planning of our services,
2) who can provide the services, and
3) who rely on these services.
We need a clean sweep – to replace the old dysfunctional Council with a team without political agendas; one with the skills to manage properly, one with a fresh and honest approach and a true regard for the community.

3. Given the turmoil that has surrounded council, why are you the best person to lead Cessock?

I have had extensive experience in both business and politics. I have never shied away from making the decisions required to achieve the best outcomes. I have a long term commitment to the region.

4. There are 10 Mayor candidates, is this the worst outcome given that the election is now likely to be decided on preferences?

Yes. Because of the optional preferential system, the power of each vote has been diminished – and that power is being handed over to the major political parties. It makes it more difficult for an Independent to be elected. More importantly, it makes it more difficult for the voter.

5. Who are you preferencing?

I am leaving it up to the individual to decide who they should preference.

6. What would be your main priority if elected?

To make the Council work efficiently, effectively and honestly for the benefit of all in our community.

7. What is your biggest challenge in winning this election?

Encourage those who are “dyed-in-the-wool” Labor, Liberal, National or Green voters to give me their second preference. We need to win back community trust in local government and their belief that we can indeed have an honest and effective council.

8. Why should rate payers have faith in you?

I have the determination and proven track record to provide the leadership required. I believe Council should operate with strict fiscal responsibility and transparency. I encourage community involvement. I truly believe we can improve our region and I have the plan, the dedication and the experience to do it.

9. How would you rate the performance of the current council and what would you change?

The present council is dysfunctional – you say it yourself. I rate it poorly. I believe the new councillors should appoint their own General Manager. The current General Manager will be eligible to re-apply for their position. Also, I will ask for a full audit of the Councilʼs practices and performance – to commence
immediately after the election. Its findings and recommendations will be presented to Council at the same time the new General Manager is appointed. A new budget will be prepared to reflect the plans adopted by the new Council.
The current Council has become isolated from the people it represents. Under the Clean Sweep Team, at least six council meetings per year will be held at Kurri Kurri. Other meetings will be held at Branxton, Greta, Weston and Wollombi.

10. How do you rate your chances of winning the election?

The community are not happy with the present Council and wants a change for the better.
We offer that change. I hope they will give us an opportunity to show them we can do it better – by stepping away from petty politics, in-fighting and expensive litigations and putting the community’s money back where it should be – towards improving the community.

  1. He sounds like a resourceful professional decent and worthy candidate. He just may get my vote!

  2. Be careful Coal Miner NOT to believe everything a ‘wannabe’ Mayor says. Try doing your own research before dishing out votes, or Cessnock might end up ‘sunk’ like he did to Elle.
