HOPE FOR REED CONTRACTORS

There’s hope that out of pocket subcontractors on the unfinished Central Coast Highway, will be given work on other major road projects near Sydney and Newcastle.

New South Wales Roads Minister Duncan Gay last month tore up $200-million in road contracts with the financially troubled Reed Group.

He will now ask new contractors to give former Reed contractors priority on four unfinished road projects including the Newcastle inner-city bypass and Great Western Highway.

After talks with the CFMEU, Mr Gay said the state government will cross check the subcontractors’ pay claims with Reed.

“Roads and Maritime Services will work through with each
subcontractor the work done, their claims for payment and payments
made by Reed. This will be cross-checked against RMS’ payments to
Reed,” a statement from Mr Gay said.
“In working through these matters, an important principle for
the government is that it is unable to pay twice for any work
done.”
