CHEMICAL SHIP JOINS QUEUE

The ship chemical giant Orica is storing explosive materials on, is due to enter the Port of Newcastle to again discharge its cargo.

The MCP Kopenhagen sailed into a sea of controversy almost a fortnight ago, when it was revealed Orica was using it to store ammonium nitrate, due to operational challenges at its troubled Kooragang Island plant.

Orica insists it has permits to carry out what it calls the routine movement of ammonium nitrate through the port.

The Maritime Union has raised concerns about conditions facing the ship’s crew.
