NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS SIGN MASON FOR 2012

Willie Mason will resurrect his career with the Knights after signing with the club for the rest of the season.

The move is a return home for the 32-year-old who played for the Macquarie Scorpions as a junior.

Mason said he is aware he has plenty of hard work ahead of him to earn a spot in the NRL team.

“I am grateful that Wayne and the club have shown confidence in me to contribute to the club and I will not be wasting the opportunity to not only perform on the field but to contribute to the Knights strong community programs,”

Knights CEO Matt Gidley said, “We are pleased to be able to offer Willie an opportunity to re-establish his rugby league career back in his home town”.

Mason is expected to train with the club for the first time tomorrow and could wear the red and blue this weekend for the Newcastle NSW Cup team against the Illawarra Cutters.

The former Australian representative, who has played for Canterbury, Sydney Roosters and North Queensland, eventually moved to the English Super League for Hull Kingston Rovers, where he was cut just six months into a three-year contract.

Mason last played in the NRL in 2010.

Kurt Gidley tweeted “Looking forward to playing along side my big mate @mase21 again! Just had lunch with him and he’s pumped to be apart of the @NRLKnights”
