Football Federation Australia boss Frank Lowy has had enough, and terminated the A-League licence held by Gold Coast United Chairman Clive Palmer.
Palmer and the FFA have been on a crash course in recent weeks, culminating on the weekend when the Gold Coast players wore a strip with the words Freedom of Speech on the front.
Frank Lowy says he had no alternative but to revoke Palmer’s licenece to protect the integrity of the game after what the billionaire referred to as the “flagrant disregard” for A-League rules.
The decision is likely to lead to legal action.
Football Federation Australia says it is willing to pay the Gold Coast players for the remaining four matches of the season, however there are doubts over whether Sunday’s clash with the Wellington Phoenix will go ahead in New Zealand.
