Vale Leigh Maughan

NBN News has lost a member of its family – iconic sports broadcaster Leigh Maughan (OAM) who passed away overnight at the age of 84.

Leigh was a legendary presenter for NBN throughout the 70s and 80s and was also instrumental in establishing the Newcastle Knights.

The born and bred Novocastrian will be remembered as a much-loved larrikin and he’ll be sorely missed.

Natasha Beyersdorf:
“Leigh Maughan was a man of many passions from family to sport, and fortunately for us, NBN News. His quick wit and charm made him a favourite to viewers and his on-air quips are the stuff of legend here. Above all, I found him to be a true gentleman with a huge heart for everything Newcastle.”
Gavin Morris:
“‘Legend’ gets thrown around too easily these days but Leigh is truly deserving of it. He leaves behind something beautiful for all Novocastrians. A true legacy. And a bloody good bloke!”

NBN News would like to offer its condolences to Leigh’s family and friends.

We’ll have a look back at his illustrious career – and his many memorable moments – tonight at six.
