COUNTING THE COSTS OF THE FIGS

The million-dollar plus bill for the Laman Street figs fiasco will continue to climb, as Newcastle Council prepares for an expensive legal battle.

Council and Save Our Figs will meet in the Land and Environment Court next week, following the trees’ latest stay of execution.

  1. What is the council so afraid of. Why are they willing to spend so much money to stop an independent assessment
    $20,000 for an independent assessment.
That is all that is needed.

  2. What an embarasing waddle through political life for Bob Cook, Aaron Buman, Brad Luke, Scott Sharpe, Mike Jackson, Graham Boyd and Mike King for what can only be described as the death nell of their careers. To place such obtuse stubborness before that of the City of Newcastle is a total disgrace. I’ve seen first hand their childishness as they duck, weave and dodge the opportunity to lay this thing to bed. Rather, they feel it necessary to waste our cash by keeping up a rediculous facade, than say, “Sorry Newcastle, we got it wrong”! It’s time to go guys. You are invited by the public to stand for the public. Your own agendas should not count and as you’ve seen, won’t be tolerated despite your pathetic attempts to discredit those who call you to question. I invite you all to now stand down. You are not what Newcastle wants. Accept Barry’s offer! We know it will prove you all wrong, but atleast you can walk away knowing how pathetically wrong you have been and your enormous misjudgement of the rate payer. Goodbye guys… ; )

  3. i wonder how many actual rate payers are in SOF…quite a lot of the people who have been hanging around these trees do not look as if they pay any rates…. specially the bloody idiots up the trees…..the amount of money wasted daily here is shameful…. the guards are doing their job.. and being abused for it….not at all fair…once a for all…. a decision needs to be made….

  4. I cannot believe the ignorance being portrayed in these comments. Each person at the figs is either a rate payer (many with high qualifications and are well known and respected professionals in their field), are studying at this present time, or are retired and former rate payers.

Also, I would like to clear this up once and for all – the security guards and police have a good relationship with the protesters. We are never threatening or rude or violent towards them.

It’s important to get your facts straight before coming on public forums and spreading lies and propaganda.

  5. *And by comments I mean one that has currently been posted on this site and the general attitude being displayed on the Herald’s website. I agree with you Cathy and Stephen. 🙂

  6. Well over a million dollars spent avoiding an independent assessment, at a cost less than $20,000, only shines a glaring spotlight on those who are desperate to avoid us all finding out the trees are perfectly healthy after all.

Desperate to get the trees out! Desperate to prevent a proper assessment! WHY?
