FIGS TO GET THE CHOP ON A TECHNICALITY

Newcastle Council’s General Manager has released a statement today on the long running debate over the future of the city’s landmark Laman Street fig trees.

I have this morning been advised that the preferred arborist is unable to support the independent assessment of the Laman Street trees.

Save Our Figs agreed that if this arborist was not available, the proposed assessment would not proceed.

I am now left with no other option than to implement the resolution of 19 July, which is to remove and replace the trees as soon as practical.

As you know, the safety of community members, council staff and contractors is of the utmost importance. To address previous concerns, extra safety measures will be put in place for the tree removal process.

Work will not commence until Friday at the earliest.

I acknowledge that community members have a right to demonstrate. However, I urge the public to do so in a respectful and lawful manner to assist Council ensure the safety of all involved.
