Former Kempsey Mayor Janet Hayes died in a Sydney Hospital last night surrounded by family members.
Ms Hayes, who was being treated at the Royal Prince Alfred since collapsing from a brain haemorrhage in August, died peacefully.
She was 63 years old.
Ms Hayes had been a Kempsey councillor since 1998, serving as mayor from 2001 to 2006.
In recent years, she was also the administrator of the Kempsey Showground, steering a major upgrade of the historic community facility.
Ms Hayes is survived by her four children and extended family.
