PARAS SAY PENNY PINCHING PUTTING LIVES AT RISK

The union representing New South Wales paramedics says cost cutting measures by the ambulance service could have resulted in the death of at least one patient.

It claims an on-call paramedic wasn’t sent to a heart attack patient at East Gresford in the Hunter Valley, because of overtime concerns.
Instead, the union says an ambulance based more than 50 kilometres away was dispatched.

The first paramedics arrived about half an hour after the original call and found members of the public attempting CPR on the patient.

The man couldn’t be revived.
The ambulance service is considering its response to the claim.
