FIGHT GOES OUT OF FIG ISSUE

Landmark fig trees, lining part of Laman Street in Newcastle’s arts and cultural precinct are to get the chop.
Save Our Figs campaigners have maintained a protracted campaign to keep the chainsaws away, but a final bid for a mediated resolution was quashed in a city council vote last night.

Council Officers insist the trees present a public safety and liability risk. Council has spent more than $600,000 on legal costs and consultants reports, so far, and last night voted against a further round of independent mediation.
