AUTHORITIES WARN BEACHGOERS TO STEER CLEAR OF SEALS
Over the last couple of weeks, an unusual visitor has been spotted chilling out on beaches along the Far North Coast.
This Sub-Antarctic Fur Seal pup has been hauling out on the shores between Ten Mile Beach and South Ballina.
Although it may be tempting to get a closer look, authorities are warning the public to stay at least 40 metres away from any resting seal.
“While they may look cute they can actually move pretty fast over sand and rocks and they do have really sharp teeth so they can inflict severe damage on somebody.”
National Parks and Wildlife Services urge anyone who spots one of the marine mammals to contact their office.
A seal usually doesn’t stay on shore for longer than 48 hours.
