INDIGENOUS STUDENTS GAIN RESPECT FOR THEIR CULTURE
Indigenous students at Goonellabah Public school were taught to have more respect for their culture at a seven-week mentoring and cooroboree program.
40 students from years three to six were taught traditional dances, hunting skills and how to light a fire.
“Now the boys have a greater respect for their own culture and their history, their self esteem rises their self awarness, now they enjoy coming to school and learning”
Teachers have also noticed a change in behaviour, with students showing more respect.
” the responsibility, and respect these kids have and are developing also spin off to the local community as well ”
The school is hoping to continue the program next year.
