Gale force wind and rain is lashing the Hunter Coast from a low pressure system that is gradually moving offshore.
Around 17,000 Energy Australia customers had disrupted power supplies as lines came down and repair crews went to work. Most services across Sydney the Central Coast and Hunter have now been restored.
The strong winds created a big cleanup for council crews after dozens of household garbage bins were blown over in beachside suburbs.
