Newcastle councillors have given the green light to a $7-million makeover of the Merewether Beach precinct.
The plan includes widening the promenade and establishing cafes, a surf viewing area, a new lifeguard facility and surf club.
Jefferson Park would also be reconfigured to better connect with the beach.
Council says a more detailed design is needed before work can start on the project.
