NEWCASTLE FIX OUR CITY RALLY

Hundreds of people attendeda a rally in Newcastle on Thursday night, calling on the state government to get on with the job of revitalising Newcastle.

But while Fix Our City supporters massed inside City Hall, another group set up camp nearby, pushing a different view.

Paul Lobb was there.

  1. If these people bothered attending the Fix Our City rally rather than trying to gatecrash it they would see their goals are one in the same. Fix Our City may be pushing to cut the rail at Wickham (west of Stewart Ave), but the rail corridor will be retained using less obstructive light rail.

  2. I agree Sharon, I attended the rally along with about 700 other people and also attended about 12 months ago a session by Hunter Business Chamber with the same speaker from University of Newcastle who presented other cities which had excellent urban plans as well as some which had been ‘fixed’. If they (SOR) just listened they would realise that whatever the soltuion to transport (light rail, buses or both) the corridor will be reserved as a transport corridor and it would open up the city to connect the successful waterfront with the dead Hunter Street. Government, please listen to the majority who have shown their support last night!

  3. Shannon and Erin – you just don’t get it. It is not about good urban planning, or jobs, or billions in investment in OUR city..it is about how important 2km of railway line is…

  4. well dave maybe you can help all of us to ‘get it’ and explain how the SOR plans to revitalise the CBD? As Steffen Lehmann said last night- fixing our city is much much more than a transport issue, and focussing purely on 1 issue is plain ignorant, just like the rest of the SOR crew and what they stand for.
