BEACHES INFESTED WITH MICRO PLANTS

Coffee coloured surf on the mid north coast has bathers steering clear of some beaches.

Authorities have been receiving reports of suspected oil spills but the discolouration is due to naturally occurring phenomena called Surf Diatoms.

The diatoms are microscopic single-celled plants which from time to time can be seen in massed concentrations.

The diatoms are not toxic, although they may cause irritation to some people.

Bathers are advised to avoid heavy concentrations and shower after swimming.

Beaches from Woolgoolga to Sawtell are currently experiencing the infestations.
