Bar Beach residents have been angered by planned changes to Empire Park, from the state government and Newcastle Council.
They’re forming a group to rally against the proposals, which include a retail strip on the eastern side of the park, facing Memorial Drive.
There’s also a plan to relocate the skate park to the western side of the reserve, closer to homes.

Why would the New South Wales government want to mutilate Empire Park if not for financial gain? This beautiful and functional park serves many of our community in a range of sporting and leisure activities. We certainly do not want to lose thousands of square metres to a new skate park, retail shopping area and an unnecessary road.
