DARING LIFEBOAT HISTORY CAPTURED IN NEW BOOK
Daring souls who rowed to sea in Newcastle’s lifeboats to rescue shipwrecked sailors, have been immortalised in a new book.
Historian Pamela Harrison has chronicled the history of the lifeboat service, from 1838 to 1946.
Hundreds of lives were saved at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour, which earned a fearsome reputation as a dangerous port in bad weather.
The book features stories about Newcastle’s most famous lifeboat, the Victoria, which is preserved at the city’s Maritime Centre.
