Protesters have cheekily re-branded next month’s Repco World Rally event in the northern rivers.

They labelled it the Wrecko Rally in a demonstration outside a franchise of the naming rights sponsor.

  1. hello people.

i am all for the repco rally. look forward to seeing thosse protesters in murwillumbah ill be sure to speak my mind.

at the speed on tweed in 2008 they had a solar powered car but it did not race beacuse of a elctrical fault.

these protesters do not see the benefits of having a event like this. all the tourists and spectators coming to watch and spend their money. it will benifit the local comunities.

  2. I suggest that all businesses that welcome the rally and its officials / competitors / spectators put a sign up in their window saying that they support the rally.

That way we know where to spend our money.

Typically, a few spoil it for the rest of the community.

  3. In response to “Fatty” (August 25), I believe that all of the supporting businesses HAVE put up signs. Not many hey?
Additionally, yes, a few are spoiling it for the few. An international federation and their very outdated form of entertainment are spoiling for our peaceful community.
And, to Dion Rogers (August 24), those “protesters” could well be your next door neighbours, child’s school teachers, priest, green grocer, councillors, professor, police person, fire fighters or doctor so be prepared for an insightful debate such which will only demonstrate the negative social impact that this event has forced on the Tweed and Kyogle communities.

  4. No problems Chantal.

Let the supporting business rake in the cash while all the rest sit on top of their boxes wondering why they won’t get any business.

You want to talk about social impact then maybe you should go talk to all the dope growers and herion takers down Nimbin way.

Fatty- Who has spent plenty of time in Kyogle/Tweed holidaying…

  5. How much do you think they will be raking in, Fatty? IF all goes according to plan, the Socioeconomic Impact Assessment report predicts that Tweed and Kyogle will share a grand total of $11M. If Tweed’s share is say $7M, then we are expected to increase our Gross Regional Product by ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT.
And guess what… that’s not even taking into account all the money council is pouring into this event! Then there’s all the police, fire and emergency services, road upgrades (seen Cudgera Ck Rd recently?), signage, postage…. on and on it goes.
WA broke their contract with Rally Australia because of the “financial viability” of the event… and we didn’t even get a feasibility study.

  6. With all due respect, you can look at the figures which ever way you want but I suggest if you want to get the true figures why don’t you go around and ask the store owners/ accommodation providers how the rally weekend faired for them.

Sure Tweed might score a majority of the cash but its crazy to think that people won’t spend money along their travels. Extra money that normally wouldn’t have been spent in these towns until the rally came along.

I staying near Kyogle, I’m getting my supplies from the local IGA there. I won’t be getting them from Coolangatta etc just because its cheaper. I’m supporting the community thats supports the rally.

Are you a business owner? Are you on the rally route? How are you affected?
