A teenage surfer has survived a close encounter with a shark near Byron Bay on the New South Wales north coast.
14-year-old Zack Skyring was out for an early surf with his father at Broken Head when he was knocked off his board.
The impact threw him into the air and he reportedly suffered several small puncture wounds.
He later attended school.
The shark is thought to have been a one and a half metre bronze whaler.
