One of Newcastle’s inner city hotels was badly damaged by fire overnight.
Fire broke out on the disused upper levels of the Civic Hotel on Hunter Street around 11pm.
The adjoining University House was evacuated as a precaution.
Fire investigators will spend the day trying to determine how the fire broke out.
