FISHERIES PREPARE FOR WHALE MIGRATION

Last year, eight whales had to be rescued from South East Queensland shark nets during the annual whale migration.

Over the past week, fisheries teams have been put through extensive training at Gold Coast Seaway, to make sure they’re prepared for dangerous rescues.

“Make sure they can get out to the whales safely, also use specialised training equipment so we can cut through the ropes or the shark gear and not harm the whale in anyway.”

More than 22,000 whales are expected to pass by the coast.

Migration season runs from the end of April to November.

If you spot a whale caught in nets, you should report it to Fisheries.
