LIGHT RAIL DETAILS RELEASED WITH INTERCHANGE TO BE BUILT IN NEWCASTLE WEST

It took years for the decision to cut Newcastle’s heavy rail line – now 12 months on from that, the state government has finally told us where.

A new interchange will be created at Wickham in the city’s west, with light rail then connecting passengers to the beach.

But the big-ticket plan remains equally light on details – and rail campaigners claim it’s a waste of scarce infrastructure money.

  1. What a waste of money. What will all this achieve? A lot of major cities have rail through their city centre. I bet the people making these decisions don’t use public transport and if they did I bet they wouldn’t want to get off one form of transport and onto another. How about spending money on hospitals, schools, aged care, mental health etc.

  2. Ridiculous waste of money. The only people to realistically benefit from this will be developers (funny that we have one as our Lord Mayor). How about spending a fraction of the money on turning Hunter Street back into a street (as opposed to leave it attempting to be a shopping mall). Stewart Ave and Beaumont St crossings will remain a drama. So what are they actually going to achieve? Access to Honeysuckle I hear….. Who cannot get to Honeysuckle? Its all lies. This is not a decision for the people. This is borderline corruption.
