STATE NO LONGER FIRM ON KEEPING NEWCASTLE RAIL LINE

The state government appears to be walking away from its committment to retain rail services into the heart of Newcastle.

It now says all transport options are back on the table, and the comments have angered rail supporters, who will stage a community meeting on the issue tomorrow.

  1. Newcastle lobbied for years& years for the electrification of the rail line into the city to have a better service for novocastrians. The government finally listened and spent millions doing so. Now after twenty years or so we apparently don’t want it and need it removed for the benefit of novocastrians.Want something else from Macquarie St.? don’t hold your breath you dummies.

  2. Hi Rod,

The electrification of the line you refer to in the mid ninteeen nineties was actually performed from Gosford as until that time only a diesel service ran to Newcastle necessitating a change of service at Gosford. Cutting the line at Wickham only represents a small portion of the necessary work and funds for that project.

I refer you to an article recently written in the Newcastle Herald by Tim Bohlsen, an electrical engineer from the University of Newcasgtle, which is the most visionary and practical piece of writing I have seen on this long and drawn out debate. In it he writes of plans to use light rail to connect between rail services and inner newcastle,Carrington/ Wickham, extending to the airport and connecting with the university.

I highly recommend Tim’s article as an informed overview of potential transport options for Newcastle
