A man from Redhead will be sentenced on Friday over an attack that left a young soldier with permanent brain damage.
Kurt Moroney was confronted by Daniel McRae on Hunter Street in the early hours of February 17.
He was bashed so brutally that part of his skull had to be removed and he now has to wear a helmet every day.
In Newcastle District Court today, 25-year-old McRae, who’s been in custody since February, pleaded guilty to maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in gaol.
