A proposal to explore for coal in seabeds off Newcastle is not proving popular with the Greens.
Around 30 politicians, councillors and members of the public gathered at Nobbys Beach today, to voice their concerns about the plan.
Energie Futures has applied to the state government to test for coal, with a view to convert it to gas.
“Experience shows that once an exploration license is granted, and that’s a process that costs millions of dollars, mining companies really consider that to be the first stage of mining.” said Greens MP Lee Rhiannon.
Newcastle City Council will debate a motion on the exploration tomorrow night.
