A 23-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, after he allegedly shot a 78-year-old man at close range in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield last night.
The victim sustained bullet wounds in his stomach and shoulder, after answering the door of his Croydon Street home around midnight.
The police dog squad was called-in and the accused hiding under a house at nearby Thomas Street.
The 78-year-old is in a stable condition in John Hunter Hospital.
The alleged shooter will face Newcastle Local Court today.
