WANTED MAN MAY BE IN NORTHERN RIVERS REGION

Assistance is being sought from the public to locate a man wanted on several outstanding firearm, traffic and assault warrants in the Northern Rivers. Allen O’Brien, aged 35, is known to frequent the Goonellabah and Ballina areas. Mr O’Brien is described as being Caucasian in appearance, about 160cm -165cm tall, 65kg-75kg, of a thin build, with brown hair, and brown eyes. Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers.

TEEN CHARGED WITH ALLEGED DANGEROUS DRIVING OFFENCES

A teenager will face court in relation to a single vehicle crash in the Northern Rivers which seriously injured a 15-year-old boy earlier this year. Back in February, emergency services responded to reports of a rolled Mazda 6 near Wardell Road in Alstonville, about 18km west of Ballina. A 15-year-old boy was thrown from the vehicle and taken to Lismore Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 17-year-old male driver, and three other passengers, all aged 16, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. Following investigations, a 17-year-old youth was charged with several driving-related offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. He will appear in Children’s Court in August.

ONE KILLED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION NEAR BALLINA

A 34-year-old male driver has been killed in a head-on crash in the state’s north. The accident happened just before 4pm today, on Ellis Road in Rous, about 15km from Ballina. The driver and sole occupant of the first vehicle was deceased at the scene when police arrived. A woman and child from the second vehicle were taken to Lismore Hospital for precautionary checks.

DRUGS ALLEGEDLY DISCOVERED IN BALLINA AIRPORT SEARCH

A Byron Bay man has been charged with supplying a prohibited drug, after police allegedly discovered methylamphetamine and ketamine on him during a search. Around 3:30pm yesterday, police stopped and searched the man, aged 41, in the car park of the Ballina-Byron Airport in Ballina. Police allegedly seized 110g of methylamphetamine and a small amount of ketamine. A subsequent search of the man’s home in Byron Bay allegedly turned up a number of items that were seized for examination. He was charged with supply prohibited drug (greater than indictable quantity) and two counts of possess prohibited drug. He will appear in Ballina Local Court next month.

ONE DEAD IN BALLINA AIR CRASH

A man has died in a light aircraft crash on the far north coast this morning. The Cessna Skyhawk took off from Heck Field Flying Club in Jacobs Well near the Gold Coast at 8am, on route to Ballina Airport. Just before 9am, local residents in Brooklet near Ballina heard a loud noise, and found the aircraft had crashed into bushland. There was heavy fog and low cloud in the area at the time. A 71-year-old-man – the sole occupant of the aircraft – died in the crash.

FLOOD RESCUES IN NORTHERN NSW AFTER PEOPLE IGNORE WARNINGS

At least three flood rescues have been carried out in northern New South Wales, as a low and trough continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region. The rescues have been the result of people ignoring flood warnings. Floodwater has closed the Pacific Highway in both directions between Grafton and Ballina, and the highway is expected to remain closed until at least 11:00pm tonight. Significant downpours have been recorded across the region. Yamba recieved 157mm in the 24 hours to 9am today, bringing the monthly total to 418mm, more than double the average. Careys Peak (179mm) and Bellingen (142mm) also received significant downpours until 6am this morning, while Red Hill, Woolgoolga and Comboyne have all recorded more than 100mm each. TWO ARRESTED AFTER 200KM PURSUIT NEAR BALLINA

Two men have appeared in court after a 200km-long pursuit on the far north coast earlier today. A 37-year-old man had been on the run after allegedly fleeing from a random breath test near Coffs Harbour earlier this month. Police further allege the man had waved a firearm at police during the pursuit, before evading them when he led into bushland south of Coffs Harbour. Then just before 1 o’click this morning, police sighted the man in a vehicle at Woodburn, about 35km south of Ballina. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but he allegedly drove off at high speed towards Lismore before continuing onto Alstonville and then Wardell, south of Ballina. BALLINA GREEN ARMY GRADUATES

Ballina’s green army team have graduated with flying colours. Six members were recognised this morning, during a ceremony at Boulders Beach. The group has spent the last 6 months carefully restoring seven sites along the coastline. “The guys have done planting, they’ve done bush regeneration, they’ve done track repair work, seed collection. Everything you need to do to regrow a rainforest.” Federally funded and administered by ‘Envite’ locally – the program aims to make participants job-ready. (AUDIO IN PARTS)
