WORLD WAR II FLYERS HONOURED

Rathmines on Lake Macquarie is known for its role as a Catalina seaplane base during World War Two’s Pacific campaign.
But what isn’t so well known is that many personnel from there were also sent to fight and die in the skies over Europe.
They were members of the 10 and 461 squadrons, manning Sunderland flying boats.
A memorial plaque has been unveiled at a ceremony attended by veterans and VIPs.
An RAAF Orion made a fly-over honouring the more than 200 personnel who died serving their country.
The Sunderlands were effective anti submarine aircraft, tracking and destroying German U Boats.
