POSSIBLE SEA SNAIL CANCER CURE

While the sea snail is often considered a pest, it could hold the key to curing cancer.

Researchers at Southern Cross University have found that a local marine snail produces anti-cancer agents, while several species of abalone contain natural antibodies that may be capable of boosting our immune system.

“One of the main species that I’m working on is Dicathais orbita which has very interesting cancer properties, we’ve been looking at it pre-clinical trials and it does seem to prevent the development of tumour formation.”

Dr Benkendorff is now pushing for clinical trials, and is looking at the potential medicinal properties of other molluscs.
