GOLD COAST TRAM DERAILED AFTER COLLIDING WITH FIRE TRUCK

A tram driver and two emergency services personnel have been hospitalised after a crash between a tram and a fire truck on the Gold Coast. The collision occured shortly before 8am on the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard in Surfers Paradise. The impact derailed the tram and shut down the Gold Coast’s main public transport system. The tram driver and QFES officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, while paramedics assessed the 17 people on board the tram at the scene. It’s the first derailment in two and a half years of operation of G-LINK.

WOMAN CRITICAL AFTER GOLD COAST TRAFFIC CRASH

A traffic crash on the Gold Coast overnight has left a woman in a critical condition. Shortly before 11pm, a female rider and her male passenger were travelling on a powered bicycle on Yodelay Street in Varsity Lakes, when it left the road. The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, while the man was uninjured.

19-YEAR-OLD TO FACE COURT AFTER TAXI STOLEN ON THE GOLD COAST

A teenager will appear in court this week, after a taxi driver was assaulted on the Gold Coast. Police say three men entered a taxi on Laver Drive in Robina shortly before three o’clock this morning. On arriving at their destination, one of the male passengers allegedly assaulted the 63-year-old driver by wrapping an object around his neck. The driver managed to escape, but it’s alleged the trio drove off in the taxi. Police were able to stop the vehicle with a tyre deflation device at about 3.30am, at the intersection of Distillery and Fryer Roads. One of the men, a 19-year-old from Kingston, allegedly fled on foot but was arrested soon after. He was charged with robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to stop a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and possession …

FIVE MEN CHARGED OVER ALLEGED GOLD COAST TORTURE

Five men have been charged over an alleged torture involving 16 people at a mechanic workshop on the Gold Coast. It’s alleged a 26-year-old Loganholme man was held against his will at the Southport business on Thursday last week, before jumping through a window and calling police from a nearby unit. He told officers he was taken by 16 men, tied to a chair, had paint thinner poured on him and had his groin cut during the ordeal. A man faced court over the alleged incident last week and another four men were charged over it on Wednesday, including two who appeared in court. Jaymin Higham, 30, and Giovanni Vladik, 24, faced court on charges of torture, assault occasioning bodily harm, deprivation of liberty and armed robbery. GOLD COAST ROLLERCOASTER TO REMAIN CLOSED AFTER MALFUNCTION

A Movie World rollercoaster will remain closed today as the Gold Coast theme park investigates a malfunction that left patrons dangling for 90 minutes. Twenty thrillseekers were left stranded at the top of the Arkham Asylum ride yesterday afternoon after carriages became stuck. It took Movie World staff and firefighters more than an hour and a half in the 30C-plus heat to free them. Movie World general manager Greg Yong said a “mechanical issue with the chain” had caused the roller coaster to stop.
