A leading figure in the Australian arts scene has weighed into the debate over Newcastle Council’s move to axe the position of Gallery Director.
The head of the Art Gallery of New South Wales says the role is critical, adding such a move would never happen in Sydney.

The GM is the lapdog of the self interested mayor. How can you be a large property developer and not be in conflict with interest in his position – too close to the wire.
Have you heard about the Toowoomba council after the new Newcastle GM left that position???? He decimated that council and is about to do the same to the cultural aspects of this town….shame shame shame!!!
You may want to ask this question – why is it that the mayor has never been to an exhibition opening??
