Family and personal health were cited as the reasons behind the decision.
As a victim of abuse, Bishop Thomspon has worked to uncover the systemic practices by the church that have enabled the horrific crimes against children.
Bishop Thompson established the Parish Recovery Team that works with church communities to address past abuses and assist survivors.
The Bishop has worked in the church for 38 years, with his ministry to formally conclude on May 31.
