19-YEAR-OLD PEDESTRIAN SUFFERS HEAD INJURIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A CAR

A pedestrian has been flung onto the bonnet of a car and carried a short distance, before sustaining a head injury when she fell to the ground on the far north coast.

Around 1:20am this morning, police say the 19-year-old woman was struck by a Holden Astra which was negotiating a roundabout at the intersection of Boundary Street and Hill Street in Tweed Heads.

The woman was carried on the bonnet for a number of metres before falling off and sustaining a significant head injury when she struck her head on the roadway.

She was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police say the 17-year-old female driver of the Astra drove 300m from the crash scene and crossed the border into Queensland before she stopped

She was breath tested by Queensland police and was permitted to leave the scene pending further inquiries.

Her vehicle was seized pending the issue of an interstate warrant to have it returned to NSW for examination.

Any witnesses are urged to contact police.
