FIRE GETS CLOSE TO AIRPORT

Fire fighters are on top of a blaze at Williamtown that came within a kilometre of Newcastle Airport.

Thick smoke clouded the sky for much of the day, but it didn’t interrupt flights.

The fire destroyed 22 hectares of swampland and bush.

Favourable conditions allowed crews to begin back burning this afternoon to ensure the fire remained under control.
