JOB CUTS PLANNED AT NEWCASTLE COUNCIL TO REIN IN BUDGET

Hundreds of casual employees and labour hire staff are expected to lose positions after Newcastle Council today announced immediate and tough measures to cut costs.

It comes amid a $3-million deficit in its operating budget.

The Council’s General Manager Phil Pearce today told NBN News, “Our casual workforce ranges between 300 and 330 staff and no doubt it will impact on some of those.”

Overtime will also be cut, while some recently-vacated positions may not be filled.

The deficit is being partly blamed on a drop in development applications.
