POLICE WARN, DON’T TOUCH SUSPICIOUS CANISTERS

It’s feared children could fall victim to rat poisoning, if more canisters filled with the toxic substance wash up on local beaches.

It comes after a Kingscliff man found a sinister looking, 30cm metal container, on Salt Beach early this morning.

A Hazmat team soon confirmed it held aluminium phosphide, used by cargo ships to keep rodents at bay.

“The information we have is that the chemical can be fatal if it’s either inhaled for ingested, again we would warn communuity members not to touch or interfere with the cannister at all. Contact police via triple zero as a matter of urgency.”

It’s the first reported find in New South Wales, similar cannisters have washed up on Gladstone recently.
