NEWCASTLE’S WHITE KNIGHT NOW RESCUING THE HUNTER ST MALL

It’s a move rumoured to be worth $58-million, with Nathan Tinkler again digging deep into his pockets – this time to buy land holdings in Newcastle mall.

Retailers are optimistic but cautious, with the question of whether a new retail development will go ahead yet to be officially answered.

  1. OMG – I’m Jodie at the end of this news story, and I have to say, my interview has been edited so that I come across as a “Negative Nancy” compared to the other business owners – and I’m NOT at all.
I’m so happy that Nathan Tinkler has been touted as the purchaser of the CBD precinct.
I can tell you he will get the ball rolling, as opposed to the current owners of the area.
My point was that there has been minimal support for the business owners from GPT as their interest lies elsewhere, and not in the CBD.
I hope Nathan Tinkler reads this and doesn’t think I was “having a go” as I feel it may have come across that way. The points I made that I wanted to get across above, are obviously on the editing room floor!!!

  2. Wish Nathan Tinkler good luck with his project and i can assure him that his project can never go wrong. Newcastle is such a beautiful city if they do a little bit to it will return heaps so much so that even big boy will be surprised with the success of the project. Trust me it will not only compete with oxford st,Paddington or Balmain it will be a world class place.

  3. Terrific news. And Jodie, if what you say is true, someone has done you a real disservice. Of course, it might be wise of Buildev to make life very easy for the current tenants in the interim – would probably pay off in the long run.

  4. Oh yes Ouivuwah, what I am saying is true!
Also the Herald have got it wrong as well. All leases do not expire on June 30. Mine for example is valid until December 31st, and other businesses are staggered well past my leases expiry date.
My point was – what happens to those leases that are signed and due to expire long after the Tinkler take-over?
Just one of many questions and points I made, but that particular question, was portrayed in a “negative sounding way”?
I think it’s great if Nathan tinklers Buildev Group has bought the buildings – at lease he has shown that when he does spend his money, action ensues not long after!

  5. What Jodie says here is not what it seems, at this moment her Mummalicious shop is in a stalemate & not because of rents or lease issues. it is because people cannot afford extortionate priced clothing & her market is very slim. This is Jodies 3rd failure in Newcastle & she has left a trail of problems & this is another reason why she has failed. There are other buisnesses doing quite well in the mall & these buisnesses are smart enough to forsee the market, adapt to the needs of the people & invest where it counts. Its no one elses fault but your own Jodie & this isnt negative, its just a fact to stay respectfully alive in buisness.

  6. i agree with pendo-lappy, it doesn’t seem fair to the rest of the struggling shops in the mall that the mummalicious sign hasnt even been removed yet? Pretty lazy attitude or is there some other issue? either way, it’s a disgrace to have the shop blacked out for so long & if that’s the 3RD time in Newcastle then it should be duly noted. Same attitude probably sunk the business!

  7. i can confirm that that shop has been left unchanged for 2 months now, usually within a week people clean up & move out. It should be left respectfully tidy & ready for someone else to lease out, that’s the right thing to do. What a shame it’s just another space left unessesarily unused.
