ALSTONVILLE OUTRAGED OVER GRAFFITI ATTACKS

Alstonville residents are fuming follow a recent spate of graffiti attacks.

The vandalism has prompted council to re-consider installing CCTV cameras across the town, in an attempt to catch offenders in the act.

Since the Ballina Bypass was opened, Alstonville locals have reclaimed their clean and peaceful town.

But now, they say it’s being wrecked by vandals.

The latest attack occured early thursday morning, and it’s pushed residents to boiling point.

“We’ve just had Council do a major upgrade of our Main Street and beautification and it looked absolutely fantastic and we’ve got these people that come out in the middle of the night and desecrate it. I just don’t know what they’re thinking.”

Alstonville has been the centre of several graffiti attacks in recent months…Some cases have cost shop owners up to $5,000 to clean up

“Alstonville locals and shopkeepers are fed up with the constant graffiti that’s been happening in the last 6 months. So they’re now working with the council to come up with a solution to the problem.”

Several years ago Council deemed CCTV cameras too expensive, but they are now being re-considered as a viable option to catch these criminals in the act.

“Until you can actually catch them on tv or someone witnesses them not a lot can be done, so we’ve had a talk with the business owners and we originally looked at putting CCTV cameras in but it was very expensive. There’s new technology now that will make it that we can do it much cheaper.”

Police are calling for anyone with information on the graffiti to call crime stoppers.
