- Crisis talks are underway in Sydney – aimed at tackling radicalisation, in the wake of the shooting murder of police worker Curtis Cheng. New South Wales premier Mike Baird is having a round table with police chiefs and Islamic community leaders.
- A home in Sydney’s West has gone up in flames, forcing the entire street to evacuate. Fire crews battled the intense blaze at Merrylands, which destroyed a garage and came dangerously close to spreading. The four residents, including a toddler, escaped without injury.
- Politicians have returned to Canberra with Malcolm Turnbull streets ahead of Bill Shorten in the prime ministerial polls.
- The Mayor of Geelong, former paparazzo Darryn Lyons has apologised for wearing a T-shirt with a naked image of singer Madonna which some councillors described as “appalling and degrading to women”.
