WAYNE BENNETT PRAISES YOUNG KNIGHTS TRIO

The Knights’ win was even more remarkable considering the high profile players they were missing, including James McManus, Akuila Uate and Darius Boyd. Jake Mamo was a late addition to the side, while Sione and Chanel Mata’utia became the first brothers to debut together in the NRL since 1942. After facing some early tests, the trio came up with some vital plays. “They were outstanding, Sione and his brother Chanel, Jake, they were playing a quality football team here tonight.” Jarrod Mullen will have scans to determine the extent of an abdominal strain. He missed the second half, but Dane Gagai proved an able replacement at five eighth.

WAYNE BENNETT RETURNS TO THE BRONCOS

Wayne Bennett will return as head coach of the Brisbane Broncos next year, after signing a three-year contract reportedly worth $4-million. The supercoach led the club to six premierships between 1992 and 2006. It comes less than two weeks after Bennett announced he’ll step down from his post with the Newcastle Knights at the end of the current NRL season.
