NEWCASTLE TO BECOME ‘SMART CITY’ AFTER ‘SMART GRID’ SIGN OFF

The Prime Minister has signed off on an agreement, that will see Newcastle trial Australia’s first so-called smart grid.

It’s part of a push to help households reduce their energy use.

  1. After doing some research on the Smart Grid, it seems they will be able to turn off your appliances for a few minutes then back on or for example turn the thermostat on your air conditioner up from 20-24 if there is a load on the grid.
This enables them to save on grid infrastructure in place of upgrading the grid.
The new smart meters have a life span of 10-15 years where the old electromechanical meters have a life span of around 60 years.

The smart meter relays a reading back to base every minute or so informing them of your minute by minute use and enables them to know what appliances you have turned on at any time of the day. I don’t like my neighbours knowing when I turn the television on let alone anyone else.(Massive privacy concerns on that one). My question is: If there is a load on the grid and they turn my air con up from 20 to 24 degrees, why should I pay for the unit running at 24 degrees after they have turned it up? Or if they turn it off then back on, why should I pay for the consumption after they have turned it back on? (User pays). Also should they not pay for part of the purchase cost of my air con or other appliances seeing as they want part control of them?

In your story you mentioned the electric cars being used in the trial smart grid.
Doing some research you will see they plan to use the batteries in the vehicle you have purchased and paid for as electricity storage devices for when there is a higher demand for power. They will drain your batteries back into the grid then recharge them again later. These are batteries you’ve paid for. Every time you charge and discharge a battery you are shortening it’s life. Possible they should part pay for the purchase seeing they want part use of them.

Also the National Broadband Network is not being rolled out from the goodness of their heart. When do you ever get something for nothing in this country? The National Broadband Network will be used for the transfer of data back to base from your Smart Meter. That is why we are miraculously jumping to 100 mb/s, because the massive transfer rate is needed for the massive transfer of your minute by minute electricity and appliance use data and the transfer of your in home privacy to their data bases.

It would be nice to see investigative journalists do their job and report the truth rather than Government sanitized garbage.

    Thank-you.

  2. Responding to A Nucifora, while there are some advantages to NBN and smart grid roll out being planned together (yes you do need a back channel for data for the smart grid, and the NBN would be a very reliable one), that is not the reason the NBN needs to be 100 mb/s. The data sent back by smart meters is the amount of energy consumed over the time period being reported. Typically this is once per day, but in some better implementations it is once every 15 minutes. That number is, well, just a number. 16 bits. It hardly need 100 million bits per second to send back 16 bits every 15 minutes. Any form of internet connection will do and it is so small it will have no effect on the available bandwidth.

Some time in the future people might want to use smart grid tech to switch on and off appliances. Again this will require a data transfer of one message, again 16 bits is more than sufficient.

The NBN is a great economic boost for Australia. Smart Grid has great potential for driving energy efficiency and base load management. Not every home in Australia has internet, and those that do have it by a variety of sources, so yes having 92% of homes connected to the 1 network makes rolling out smart grid easier, but it is patently ridiculous to suggest that the government wants to put in a 100mb/s so they can monitor you.
