CCTV REJECTED BY BYRON COUNCIL

Byron Council has voted against a motion to install CCTV cameras in its CBD, despite ongoing pressure from the police and business community.

The motion was put forward by Councillor Dianne Wood at yesterday’s meeting, in response to the growing problem of alcohol related violence in town.

“Its wrong for us not to try and protect our community by liasing with police, by liasing with business and trying to isolate the hotspots and at least try and protect people by putting in CCTV cameras.”

Council has opted to seek funding for crime prevention as an alternative to a big brother style approach.

Byron Bay has been rated as the fourth worst town in the state for alcohol related violence.
