BOLT MAKES GUEST APPEARANCE AT JETS V MARINERS TRIAL

The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, was an interested spectator at this afternoon’s friendly between the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets at Maitland. Bolt didn’t see game time, but there was still plenty of action for the thousands of fans in attendance. The Mariners opened the scoring as a Jack Clisby free kick tricked young keeper Noah James. The Jets hit back, as Jason Hoffman found the net at the back post. Maitland boy Ben Kennedy was doing his best to keep his former club at bay. While James made up for the earlier goal with a great save, the two eventually finished locked at two-all.

BOLT BOUND FOR THE CENTRAL COAST MARINERS

Eight-time Olympic gold-medallist and the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, is officially bound for the Central Coast Mariners. The club confirming late today, that the Jamaican runner has committed to an indefinite training period, with the aim to develop into a professional footballer. The agreement between the Mariners and Bolt doesn’t guarantee him a professional playing contract post training period. Bolt says he’s very excited to head to the yellow-and-navy HQ: “It has been my dream to play professional football and I know that it will involve a lot of hard work and training to get to the level required to play and make an impact in the A-League.” Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp will provide more details about the deal tomorrow from the Mariners Centre of Excellence at Tuggerah.

JETS SIGN NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL ON TWO YEAR DEAL

Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna says the club is open to signing another high-profile marquee, even if Ronald Vargas extends his stay. Newcastle officials today confirmed the signing of New Zealand international, Matthew Ridenton, on a two-year deal. The 22-year-old midfielder has made 72 appearances for the Phoenix, playing part of his career under current Jets coach, Ernie Merrick. Ridenton was voted Wellington’s best under-23 player in the club’s disappointing 2017/18 campaign, starting all but one game.

FFA ADMITS TO VAR DEBACLE IN A-LEAGUE DECIDER

Football Federation Australia has found a technical failure in the Video Assistant Referee system meant there was no access to the camera which would have enabled him to make an offside ruling for the goal that gave Melbourne Victory the title. FFA’s Head of Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League, Greg O’Rourke, said the capture software that uploads the broadcast feed into the VAR system was partially lost for 30 seconds before Victory’s goal. It wasn’t until several minutes after the goal that it was restored, too late to change the decision as the game had been restarted. “We are extremely disappointed at this failure of the VAR technology,” O’Rourke said, “And we understand the disappointment and frustration of the Newcastle Jets, their fans and indeed all football fans. “VAR was introduced here and in other parts of the world as …
