MAN REFUSED BAIL OVER ARMED ROBBERY IN ARMIDALE

A 33-year-old man has been charged with the armed robbery of a Beardy Street liquor store in Armidale on Sunday night. Police say an attendant was threatened around 7:45 by a man demanding cash, which he stole along with a bottle of vodka. Officers arrested the man on a Markham Street cycleway about three hours later. He’s been refused bail, and will reappear in Armidale Local Court early next month.

MAN BEHIND BARS FOLLOWING HIGH-SPEED POLICE PURSUIT

A man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail following a high-speed pursuit near Black Mountain. Police say about 4:30 on Saturday, the man failed to stop when they attempted to pull him over. After reaching speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour, he crashed through a fence on Puddledock Road near Armidale. He faced Armidale Local Court today, where he pleaded guilty to a string of charges including dangerous driving and refusal to stop for police. He’ll be eligible for parole in 12 months.

WATER SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM TO FLOW INTO TAMWORTH CLASSROOMS

Tamworth is aiming to raise a generation of smarter water-users. It’s National Water Week, and Tamworth Regional Council has developed a program that will be taught in schools across the city to show how precious water is. 40 per cent of the region’s residential water is used outside, and the multi-media education tool aims to reduce this. “We don’t know when our next lot of substantial rainfall is coming, so we really need to use our water sustainably, be as smart as we possibly can with our water, and use just enough water to get the job done and no more.”

MAN ARRESTED OVER ARMIDALE BOTTLE SHOP ROBBERY

A 33-year-old man remains in custody in the state’s north west, after a bottle shop was robbed in Armidale. The incident happened at a store on Beardy Street just before 8 o’clock last night, with police alleging the man made off with cash and a bottle of vodka. Officers later arrested a man on a cycleway on Markham Street. He was taken to Armidale Police Station.

TEEN INJURED IN MOTOCROSS ACCIDENT

A teenager is being flown to hospital following a motorcross accident at Quirindi. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew to the scene on Sunday afternoon, after reports a 17-year-old had come off his bike while going over a jump. It’s understood he was run over by two of the following bikes. He’s being treated for possible abdominal injuries, and is expected to be flown to Tamworth Hospital.
