SAWTELL LOSES ICONIC SHOREBIRD COLONY
This year’s breeding season for endangered shorebirds has sustained a major blow.
One of the Coffs Coast’s most important Little Tern breeding colonies at Sawtell Spit is threatened – after pet dogs were seen repeatedly chasing the birds.
“Sadly, for the first time in 20 years it appears Sawtell is lacking its iconic little tern breeding colony.”
National Parks and Wildlife says the Little Terns are extremely vulnerable to attack.
Rangers will be increasing patrols around the area over the holiday period.
“What we’re asking people to do is to abide by park regulations in the interest of wildlife conservation.”
