Two men have been arrested, after an officer was assaulted in a road-side altercation at Wallsend.
Shortly after 11pm Monday night, Newcastle Police stopped a black Holden ute on Walford Street, after it was seen driving erratically.
As officers approached the car, the 44-year-old learner driver pushed the door open and allegedly lunged at the officer and assaulted him.
Two 18-year-old men then got out of the car and allegedly started verbally abusing officers.
When the driver continued to act aggresively, officers arrested him using a taser and capsicum spray.
One of the 18-year-old men, from Wallsend, was also arrested after he became too aggressive.
Both men were taken to Waratah Police Station, where the driver allegedly returned a positive breath test reading of 0.183.
He was charged with a string of driving offences, including high range PCA, assault officer in execution of duty, and learner driver not display ‘L’ plates.
He was refused bail to face court on Tuesday.
While the 18-year-old Wallsend man was charged with two offences, was granted bail to appear at court on March 7.
A senior constable involved in the altercation was treated at the scene by paramedics, before being taken to the Mater Hospital for back and minor head injuries.
