The Kris Lees-trained Protectionist will not get the chance to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups.
The five-year-old finished 15th in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup, then pulled up sore.
A joint in its pelvis will now require treatment.
The horse was due to see a vet today, but for now Lees says he’s not sure when Protectionist will return to racing.
In some positive news, Lees was pleased with stablemate Lucia Valentina, after she ran ninth in the cup.
